Dr Lu graduated from Guangzhou Medical University in China and has requalified in Australia as a medical practitioner with general registration. Dr Lu then proceeded to undertake further training in chemical pathology at Monash Health, Austin Health and Melbourne Pathology and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 2006. Dr Lu continued her career at Melbourne Pathology as a Chemical Pathologist.

Dr Lu has also completed a Master of Human Nutrition at Deakin University and a PhD in Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at Monash University.

She is an adjunct lecturer at the Department of Medicine, Monash University. Dr Lu has a special interest in the areas of nutrition, diabetes and thyroid disorders. In recent years, she has evaluated common methods available in Australia for vitamin D, vitamin B12, HbA1c and thyroid function tests.

Dr Lu has published widely and has collaborated with medical colleagues on many studies including vitamin D deficiency and risk of diabetes and kidney disease, HbA1c for diagnosis of diabetes, and establishing thyroid function reference intervals in children and in pregnancy.
